The best method for today is making your own back links from scratch. At least the first tier links which are directly connect with your money. This way if something goes wrong you can remove the problematic link and create new links.

I wonder if those .edu links still working. There used to be a high demand for those.

Most social media sites like Twitter, Tumblr doesnt even give nofollow backlinks. They redirect all out going backlinks. But links in these sites helps a lot when you want to get your links indexed fast.

Another reason why using social media could be beneficial is because many social profiles and Twitter rank so well in Google search. Check things like Celeb names etc you will find their Twitter, Instagram, Facebook profiles rank over many high content websites.

Well there are so many methods but I will tell you a easy to way to get some quality back-links from related sites. Search Google for keyword you want and now check sites listed in search result. Make a list of sites where you can get a back-link from those ranking pages. There will be plenty of blogs and social sites where you can add a comment and also forum posts where you can do share a link with a quality post. You can keep doing this for different keywords and difference pages of your website. 


Long term and more safer way is building your own back-link empire. This gonna need time and sometimes bit of money too.

as you said the highest traffic source of my blog is came from my Facebook fan page. that help me to get fast index on google

true . my website used to grow fastly when i share my website link to facebook group

Popular social sites get crawled every second since these have massive number of pages and content so those links shared get crawled and indexed faster too.
