Set up and secure my VPS - meetdilip - 05-01-2016 So, I need to install 1. LAMP stack 2. a Mail server on my VPS-1 and need to do what it takes to secure it. Please tell me how to proceed ? Should I be using VestaCP to do these tasks ? How about the securing part. I was hoping to add a firewall ( CSF/ UFW ? ) and modules like fail2ban etc. Also, how do I set name server and point my domains to the VPS ? RE: Set up and secure my VPS - Dudi - 05-01-2016 You can start with these: https://post4vps.com/thread-205.html https://post4vps.com/thread-207.html But a good and simple tutorial for firewalls that's I would like to read too. RE: Set up and secure my VPS - Dynamo - 05-01-2016 VestaCP have almost everything which you need like fail2ban, mailserver, Fast Backups, Antivirus scan of files, FTP server, etc(for viewing all features please visit its site). and its easy to install too, just go here - http://vestacp.com/ and choose what things you want in your cp and hit the Generate Install command and copy paste its command to your Server. RE: Set up and secure my VPS - meetdilip - 05-01-2016 Thank you @Dynamo . I hope VestaCP automates the whole process. Let me give it a try. I saw this guide and it says we need to following things to install VestaCP. Can we do with name servers and A records ? Also, do we need a non root user with sudo privileges ? If so, kindly give the commands to create such an user Quote: An Ubuntu 14.04 Droplet (05-01-2016, 11:03 AM)Dudi Wrote: You can start with these: Thank you @Dudi . I will give it a try. RE: Set up and secure my VPS - TrK - 05-01-2016 I am using vestaCP without any errors and all those requirements i just setup an subdomain pointing to my server ip and everything is working fine with root user. RE: Set up and secure my VPS - meetdilip - 05-01-2016 @TrK Could please help me point the domain ( using NameCheap Control Panel ) to the VPS. What all things should I do ? If so, then: Login to your control panel and hit "Manage" on the domain you want to point to your server. Then, click "Advanced DNS" at the top..And click the little "Add new record button". Click A record, set the host to "@" (without the quotes), and the IP address to your server's IP address. Make sure you have Nginx/Apache running on your server, plus the required conf files for your domain. If you have all that, your website will be up within 24 hours (check propagation @ whatsmydns.net). RE: Set up and secure my VPS - meetdilip - 05-02-2016 Thanks @karatekidmonkey I am just confused where to begin from. I could set up the VPS first with LAMP stack or point the domain to the VPS ? I am planning to use VestaCP. RE: Set up and secure my VPS - TrK - 05-02-2016 If you are going to use vestaCP then you don't need LAMP, just simply install vestaCP from the bash script you can get from vestacp.com RE: Set up and secure my VPS - meetdilip - 05-02-2016 Ok @TrK What to enter in hostname , email and password columns in VestaCP ? ( Please see the attachment ) I am also confused between choosing a control panel. Which one is the best ? VestaCP or Virtualmin ? |
