So over the last few weeks I've been checking out alternatives to the Kindle app. Reason being that I discovered a wealth of online libraries, where one can download books for free. I found a reputable library but in the format "EPUB". Kindle doesn't use "EPUB", only "MOBI". I was actually happy to look for a Kindle alternative, as for me Kindle is Amazon trying to make billions instead of millions in profit at the expense of honest competitors. I was determined to use the particular online library and was prepared to ditch the Kindle App for something else if need be.

Any way, I then did research and discovered the FullReader e-book reader which I tried, and am really happy with. It was available from the Google Playstore. What attracted me to it was the large number of book extensions it caters for, also it had some really good reviews for a free Kindle alternative. The app turned out to be very simple, effortless to use, totally uncomplicated to install, intuitive, so I haven't had to search for anything, or looks for a tutorial yet. Here is more info about the app:
https://en.itense.group/fullreader.html
So now I'm wondering what other members are using for Kindle alternatives?

Yesterday I talked about Windows 11 and its new minimal requirements such as Secure Boot and TPM 2.0

A lot of people are complaining about this choice... but what do you except?
Microsoft is trying to make a revolution on their OS on both graphical and technology way. All of that is essentially hard to make for older hardware.

An older hardware has such limitations:

No secure boot

No TPM module (it can be added via CPU FW update, but Intel will not upgrade CPU that has been discontinued)

No DirectStorage API: It requires both Windows 11 and a supported GPU card

But if you still want to try out Windows 11 on bare hardware instead of a VM... here you go a guide on how to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware:

THIS GUIDE HAS BEEN TESTED ON WINDOWS 11 INSIDER PREVIEW. IT IS UNKOWN IF THESE METHOD WILL STILL WORK ON FINAL RELEASE.

Currently there are 2-3 method to successfully install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware.

First of all, we need to get on our hands a ISO of Windows 11... I can't share mine due to security reasons (who will install an OS from a random guy's iso?). I can't neither tell you how to download one because MS doesn't publish any iso for Insiders... BUT iso can be "generated" using UUP.

UUPDump is a website that allow you to create scripts that will download UUP and generate an ISO from them. The usage is very basic and doesn't need much to explain. This link points to the [color=rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.87)]22000.51 x64[/color] build. The iso creation process will take a while depending on your pc performance and internet speed.
If you are not confortable with scripts, look for a ISO on the web from a reliable source.

So, now we got a ISO that will not install the OS on our machine due to Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 limitation. What can we do?

<dvz_me_placeholder id="0" /> anticipated already one of the methods:
1) REGEDIT way

Create the bootable USB with the generated iso

During installation, when the limitation screen shows up press SHIFT+F10 and a cmd window will pop-up

Now type regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup

Create a new key called "LabConfig" and insert the following entries:

Code:

BypassTPMCheck=dword:00000001
BypassSecureBootCheck=dword:00000001

Save the changes and you should be able to continue the installation

2) Install.wim swap

Get your hands on a Windows 10 ISO

Create the bootable USB with the Windows 10 iso

Extract Windows 11 iso

Replace the install.win from USB "sources" folder with the Windows 11 one

3) Appraiserress.dll downgrade

Get your hands on a Windows 10 ISO

Create the bootable USB with the Windows 11 iso

Extract Windows 10 iso

Replace the Appraiserress.dll from USB "sources" folder with the Windows 10 one

Method 1 requires the use of regedit and it must be performed every time we want to install Windows 11. Methods 2 and 3 are "apply-once" workaround that will make your ISO capable of installing Windows 11 on every machine without any manual command input.

For applying method 2 and 3 there is a script developed by a fellow Windows modder that will apply one of them automatically but I will not post it because I still have no permission to post the script on other forums.

Let me know if you knew this methods and if you will use of them!

Did you watch Microsoft Live Event on 24 june? No?
Don't worry, I am here to sum up the essential stuff!

So, on 24 june 2021 Microsoft announced its new OS: Windows 11.

IT IS A TOTAL UI REFRESH, maybe if you disliked Windows 8 attempt to put a new UI you will hate Windows 11 too... but Windows 11 attempts is surely better than Windows 8 one!

Let's talk about the interesting topics:

UI refresh: a new UI is planned for Windows 10 too, it is code name Sun Valley and it is the 21H2 update;

Integrated Teams: Windows 11 will shift from Skype to Microsoft Teams, with a proper OS-integration, for it's calling/meeting app;

DirectStorage API: it is a feature similar to ResizableBar, your game will be able to communicate and use GPU's ram directly;

AutoHDR: Windows 11 is trying a proper implementation of HDR!

Android Applicaiton: Windows 11 will be able to run Android application! You can download them via Windows Store that is linked to Amazon App Store... it is still unknow if will be possible to sideload apps;

Virtual Desktop improvements: Windows 11 will improve your docking life, a new tabs organizer and a "monitor memory" for laptop that uses external monitors;

Widget are backs: Windows 11 has it's "relax" window where you can find useful widget. They are not the same as Windows 7 widget!

Xbox Game Pass: Windows 11 has Xbox game pass built-in on Xbox app;

Free upgrade for Windows 10 users who have a COMPATIBLE DEVICE

New minimal requirements: Windows 11 requires Secure Boot and TPM 2.0, two bios settings that can be found only on POST-2015 hardware.

A LOT MORE TO BE ANNOUNCED

As today, 28 june, Windows 11 insider program has been started, I am currently downloading the insider build and I am going to switch soon.

So, are you going to upgrade to windows 11? I am going to update at 100%
I am so exicited!

So the last week I had a project which meant I had to move some of my WordPress sites from one VPS to another. There were five Websites involved and the move should have taken me an hour or a little more to do. Except, it took up to a few days instead trying to troubleshoot a broken database.

A major hurdle turned out to be one of my oldest WordPress sites. When I move a WP site I use the All In One WP Migration Plugin to create backups after every change. So usually it's quick and easy. I create a new WP installation at the destination site. Then import the backup. With the old Website it is the first time ever that my backup had a critical issue with the database. Thing is this only happened with this very old WordPress site. The other sites that had old WP themes were OK, but the site that had the critical database issue was a very old theme called Tetris.

It has happened in Windows 7 and It still happens in Windows 10. It doesn't freeze anymore but slowness is still there. Also, they have plugins and pretty must most of the stuff you have in the Chrome app store.

I know that this news is a bit old, 4 days ago, but I touches me at the core and I wanted to write about it.
If you didn't read it, don't worry I will provide a "offensive-less" summary of what the researchers of Minnesota tried to do.

On 21 April 2021 an email from Greg Kroah-Hartman announced his decision to ban University of Minnesota from the Linux development contributors and the revert their commits (= nullify all their code changes). The researchers tried to intentionally insert bugs in an unauthorised Penetration test to perform an experiement described on one of their scientific article... THEY COULD HAVE AFFECTED YOUR SECURITY.

These ***** researcher just used the trust of the open source community to just to perform a dangerous experiment to boost their own paper-career. It is disgusting.
We should thanks the numerous reviewers who protect us by inspecting the code.

I will stop here my personal summary because I could use a offensive tone, so I would just append the "polite" email from Greg Kroah-Hartman:

Code:

I have been meaning to do this for a while, but recent events have
finally forced me to do so.

Commits from @umn.edu addresses have been found to be submitted in "bad
faith" to try to test the kernel community's ability to review "known
malicious" changes. The result of these submissions can be found in a
paper published at the 42nd IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy
entitled, "Open Source Insecurity: Stealthily Introducing
Vulnerabilities via Hypocrite Commits" written by Qiushi Wu (University
of Minnesota) and Kangjie Lu (University of Minnesota).

Because of this, all submissions from this group must be reverted from
the kernel tree and will need to be re-reviewed again to determine if
they actually are a valid fix. Until that work is complete, remove this
change to ensure that no problems are being introduced into the
codebase.

This patchset has the "easy" reverts, there are 68 remaining ones that
need to be manually reviewed. Some of them are not able to be reverted
as they already have been reverted, or fixed up with follow-on patches
as they were determined to be invalid. Proof that these submissions
were almost universally wrong.

I will be working with some other kernel developers to determine if any
of these reverts were actually valid changes, were actually valid, and
if so, will resubmit them properly later. For now, it's better to be
safe.

I'll take this through my tree, so no need for any maintainer to worry
about this, but they should be aware that future submissions from anyone
with a umn.edu address should be by default-rejected unless otherwise
determined to actually be a valid fix (i.e. they provide proof and you
can verify it, but really, why waste your time doing that extra work?)

thanks,

I was using valet for macOS, but I have to switch windows as my Hackintosh laptop is getting pretty warm.
I found laragon page is pretty compelling and offer similar features like valet. I installed and it's been 2 years that I never tried another dev stack.
Here I am sharing some of the features that I like, you can get the full feature set from their website Laragon .

1. Pretty Url and sharing

I need to change all the host file manually for every app that I create, now laragon do that for me automagically. It creates app.test or anything you like as an extension. And when I have to share from my computer sometimes it does not register my localhost, but laragon makes sharing with ngrok just one click.

2. Comes with some goodies

It comes with notepad++,git and ConEmu which is better than dos in my opinion. HeidiSql portable software also a good alternative for phpmyadmin.

A free & self-hosted DNS sinkhole Adblocker

Many of you may already know AdGuard as a application for Android and iOS to block advertising and other bad stuff on your Android or iOS device via a local VPN or proxy on the device itself. It has a limited free version and a premium version based on subscription / licenses per device with much more features and configuration abilities. It is by far one of the best and most popular Adblockers for mobile devices.

Some of you may also have heard of a free and open source project called Pi-Hole that allows you block advertising and other stuff on DNS level by sending the request to a DNS sinkhole (0.0.0.0). Pi-Hole has become very popular as a self-hosted application for the Raspberry Pi but can also be hosted on any other normal Linux VPS. You bascially run your own local DNS server that blocks domains that are serving advertising on websites or other bad sites (spam, malware, etc.).

Now mix together AdGuard and Pi-Hole: you get AdGuard Home. AdGuard Home is (as the title says) a free, open source and self-hosted DNS sinkhole Adblocker by the makers of the AdGuard app. It can be compared to Pi-Hole as it basically uses the same concept to block advertising as Pi-Hole. However AdGuard Home comes with more features onboard that aren't available with Pi-Hole or can only be installed additionally with a lot of hassle via SSH. AdGuard Home is based on the code of the AdGuard DNS server service.

AdGuard Home Features
- Choose what exactly will the server block or not block.
- Monitor your network activity.
- Add your own custom filtering rules.
- You are the only one who's in control of your own server.
- Blocking ads and trackers.
- Built-in DHCP server.
- HTTPS for the Admin interface.
- Encrypted DNS upstream servers (DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS, DNSCrypt).
- Cross-platform.
- Running as a DNS-over-HTTPS or DNS-over-TLS server.
- Blocking phishing and malware domains.
- Parental control (blocking adult domains).
- Force Safe search on search engines.
- Per-client (device) configuration.
- Access settings (choose who can use AGH DNS).
- Running without root privileges.

Text = Compared features are available with AdGuard Home but aren't available with Pi-Hole (can possibly be added by additional work, software and configuration via SSH).

Sadly DNS sinkhole based Adblockers always have a little downside:

AdGuard Home GitHub Readme Wrote:Essentially, any advertising that shares a domain with content cannot be blocked by a DNS-level blocker.

Is there a chance to handle this in the future? DNS will never be enough to do this. Our only option is to use a content blocking proxy like what we do in the standalone AdGuard applications. We're going to bring this feature support to AdGuard Home in the future. Unfortunately, even in this case, there still will be cases when this won't be enough or would require quite complicated configuration.

Example: You cannot block advertising in Youtube videos. If you attempt to do so you will actually also block any Youtube video. No videos will play. Youtube will be broken. I tried this with Pi-Hole and it didn't work well at all. Nothing in Youtube worked.

Installation

You can easily install it on Linux or Mac with the command below:

Code:

curl -sSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/AdguardTeam/AdGuardHome/master/scripts/install.sh | sh

If you prefer you can also install everything manually step by step: https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdGuardHo...ng-Started

- rant coming -

Why are all software updates ADDING MB only, and not deleting MB that are no longer needed? Like isn't that a weakness of the software in its own right and counter productive? Maybe even a security risk?

How this rant came about is that I've just updated a tiny blog from WordPress 5.6 to WordPress 5.7 and that added approx 4 MB of space, without me making any changes to the blog. Just pure "script udpate"!

Worst in my experience are Anti-Virus software like Kaspersky. When I first started using Kaspersky a few years back, it was lean and mean and totally great for any of my hardware. Nowadays it's heavy, bloated, and with every new release even Gigabytes in difference. To the extent I had to remove it from my laptop, as it was weighing the system down. I could hardly move with it.

Ditto Windows 10. Why can't there be subtraction of software data that is no longer required happen at the same time when it is "updated". Like only data are added, never subtracted.

Surely when one gets an update or upgrade (particularly when you're paying for it too), then obsolete data should be removed? The aim should be to keep the software as lean as possible? Or am I missing something here?

Ditto OS! The higher the release number, the more bloated the OS gets. I look at CentOS few years ago when it was lean. Now it's super heavy in comparison.
