I'm just wondering what members prefer if they read books. Do they prefer paper books, or electronic readers like Kindle?

Off late with load shedding and hours of electricity downtime, I've discovered the love of reading again. What I do is support our local swop shops where one can buy second hand books, and then return them for an X value to purchase more. First it went slowly, but I now find myself quite passionate about my book reading again.

My preference has always been a nice paper book as there is something special with turning pages, and feeling real paper pages. But then I had a problem. A recent author I discovered, and particularly liked very much, was not that well known. I couldn't find most of his titles in the swop shops, or even regular book stores. I then checked out Amazon not sure whether I'd want to go through the upheaval of customs in South Africa (it's a serious big and very expensive deal to "import" anything here), and just for the heck of it googled free e-books. I then discovered a wealth of online libraries. I discovered one I liked and was then able to download all of the books I wanted for free.

This was a brand new way of reading books for me so there was a little bit of a learning curve involved of course. First challenge was the extension epub didn't work with with the Kindle App on my Samsung Galaxy Tab2. I then researched alternative readers and discovered FullREader which I downloaded from Google Play Store on my Tablet. I'm using Samsung Galaxy Tab2 very old tablet, but still with a decent 3 GB RAM and 32GB storage. I found the books taking up the minimum space so no problem with storage. Second big challenge was that reading books drains the Samsung Tablet battery in no time. I then had to learn how to turn everything on the Tablet off in Android, and now have the tablet on Airport Mode, Wifi and all connection turned off as well. Additionally, I purchased a cheap PowerBank that works quite well when needed. I however soon acquired a rhythm with reading approx 50 pages before a recharge is needed.

In the end I took to electronic reading like a duck to water and although I still prefer my hard copy books, I'm enjoying electronic very much. There are many pros for electronic reading vs paper books. I like that the text is backlit and one can change the fonts if one wanted to do so. Electronic reading is probably much cleaner than my second hand books - particularly considering Covid 19 times. If ever I get to travel again, I'd be able to read a book anywhere, day or night.

Hello guys,
I don't know why now I am just getting interested to do some farming. Currently I am working atleast two hour in our plot in evening time. Normally it is play time, but I decided to spend the energy for something creative. Especially I am alone in the home and having 0.8 acre land. Since brothers are away I can do anything I want in the land. I decided to make it fruitful. I have plans to make a vegetable garden soon. I have ordered for some seeds online.
The benefits I see are:
- I can earn knowledge about farming which will help me to share the same with my students.
- It will make me healthy, I may not need to go for Gym.
- May be getting better profit from the crops.
- I can make the land beautiful and atmosphere nice.
- To breathe fresh air inside our own garden will be one of the happiest feeling.
If you are interested in farming, just try YouTube channels, there are lot of methods for even creating garden in a small plot.

As the title suggest, this thread is about movies that you watched and want to recommend. It doesn't matter when you watched it or why or how old the movie is .. All I'm asking here is that the movie should have stuck with you for awhile after watching it, which should be a sign that it's a good movie..

As to the pertinent question of what makes a movie good or not?.. I'll leave it to the contributors' own judgement/sensibility.. Because you don't need to be a professional film critic to have a reasonable sense of that...

I will start here by :
> Paul Haggis's Crash (2005). An intelligent well crafted film with a wonderful original soundtrack.. Highly recommended.

> Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained (2012). It's a story about the pre-Civil War African-American Slavery in the US South.. The movie (Django Unchained (2012)) is a 2h 45min-long highly entertaining watch.. Tarantino-style!.. A good casting too.. I enjoyed the performance of Jamie Foxx (as Django) and Christoph Waltz ( as Dr. King Schultz)

> Michael Mann's Heat (1995). To my mind the best crime drama ever and Michael Mann is the master of the genre. The movie starred Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Val Kilmar, Jon Voight etc...

> Michael Mann's Collateral (2004): a gripping noir thriller starring Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Mark Ruffalo etc..

Have you interested with data science lately? It's a field that's increasing in demand from around 2-3 years ago. Everybody seems wanted to be a data scientist because of it's very sexy. I also wanted to be a data scientist as I like to learn about data and sometimes we use ML when doing data analysis. I still cannot believe that machine can also learn and I enjoyed to see how the machine works.

I'm currently learning data science by self-taught. It's fun but sometimes it's hard to understand something. I usually learn from Kaggle and pick up some data set that may interest me and try. If I'm stuck then I try to understand others code and re-implement. I'll also join a competition by one of e-commerce, NDSC by Shopee. It's free so why not give it a try. I don't expect too much to win this competition though as I'm still new to data science stuff

Hello Community!

I would like to introduce you to some very interesting and great documenatries that I have watched over the years. At the same time I would also like to give you the opportunity to share your own collection of documentaries alongside your opinions. This thread will hopefully serve as a compilation / collection thread where we all can make a superb list of the greatest and most interesting documentaries.

Let's get started. Below you can find my list of documentaries. You may notice that my fair share is mostly based on content from Netflix. I can freely and happily admit that Netflix introduced me into some really interesting and very entertaining documentaries. No matter how controversial they might be I really like them and can happily recommend them.

Description

Quote:The Devil Next Door is a documentary series of five episodes by Netflix about John Demjanjuk, accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity carried out while serving as a guard at Nazi extermination camps during World War II, who spent years living in Cleveland.

Opinion

Quote:In my opinion this is a great documentary that is a) reminding about the horrible crimes that were done by the Nazis and b) that shows how witch hunts still exist nowadays. You have to see yourself to understand what I mean. Regardless of the final verdict the whole process is / was a very interesting one. The stories by the victims and witnesses. Everything simply was very interesting and it kept me watching and finishing it episode for episode in one day.

My rating 7.5/10.

Opinion

Quote:This in my opinion is a very great documentary about a case of an accident or murder(?) that shows every aspect and side of the defendant and prosecution. You get to see experts from both sides reconstructing the whole process and explaining everything. At the same time they try to discredit each other in order to make the jury believe their own story and disregard the other side. The detail in investigation and the things that get revealed is really interesting and also heart breaking. See it yourself. Some things I simply couldn't even believe and still wonder how could the jury believe it when they got a lot of information that would proof the opposite??? Honestly... the American justice system is very often questionable to me (being from Europe).
We all know this subject is very iffy nowadays in the US and recent very similar cases that ended with the death of the victims have lead to yet another wave of riots all over the US that are still on going! Georg Floyd and many others... have been brutally killed by US police forces or extremely beaten up. You should watch both. Start of with L.A. Burning and after that watch LA 92. LA 92 will provide you with a lot of additional information and views from other perspectives. Racism in the US is part of their culture and history repeats over and over again. Once again the US justice system is very corrupt!

Opinion

Quote:The first German documentary by Netflix that has hit the right tone. It is very interesting and intriguing. The murder remains unofficially unsolved til today although it is written off as an successful assassination attempt by the RAF. The persona of Mr. Rohwedder is really interesting. It shows how much power he received from the Germany government and almost zero proper protection. He was basically used as a scapegoat if this can be said so.
My rating 7/10.

Quote:Both documentary movies show the riots in L.A. 1992 that were started by the beating of a black man by several police officers.
My rating 8/10 for both.

Hi,
So I recently came across this phenomenon(idk if u could even call it that tbh) known as "Astral Projection", where supposedly your soul can "exit" your body during your sleep, and then you can explore the "Astral Plane" where you might meet other creatures as well. You can't really interact with the physical world but you can roam around and see stuff. I stumbled upon the topic when I was searching about lucid dreaming(i.e. being aware when you're in a dream and thus being able to control it) and I was surprised to see such a big community of people who actually claim that its a thing and that It opened there perception.
I personally tried methods of astral projection available online(there are many) a few times but didn't really work out so far, so I figured I'd try posting it here just to see if anyone else was even aware of it, Its very different from the usual tech/movies topics that get posted here.
