Getting to grips with Samsung Tablet .... any suggestions?
#1
I'll be traveling via South Africa to Canada and the US next week, and the US airlines have become nasty with some of the airlines not allowing a free bag for luggage, one has to pay extra for it - like quite a hefty price.  Also, since I got a very cheap flight, it goes extra stops and I'm always worried I may lose my bags, and since it's at the end of my Canada trip, I'd hate to be on a long journey back to South Africa without my bag with me.

Long story short, I usually travel with a laptop, it is lightweight compared with most laptops, but still too heavy for being part of carry on luggage when one doesn't have a bag in the hold.  So I decided to go for a tablet for the US portion of the trip and leave my laptop stowed at the airport in Canada.  First challenge was to find a nice Samsung tablet.  I did lots of research, checked many places, but in the end opted for an older model because it was cheaper but with really good specs - Samsung Galaxy S2 9.7 inch.  I was blown away how light it is.  Like wow, it's almost as light as a feather.  I also liked it it has 3GB RAM.  The cheaper more current models all have 2 GB RAM.  Those with more RAM are much too expensive for me to consider.

Anyway, now I've got a challenge as I'd like the tablet to work with a mouse and a keyboard like with my laptop - I also want it to work with a flash disk.  And it only has a micro slot.  I then researched it, still have to see it in action, but one can get a micro to UBS adapter and in theory then attach a UBS hub and it should be working then.  Has anyone tried this yet?  I.e. using the micro port with a UBS adapter?  When I first searched I was hoping to find a UBS hub with a micro point, but was not that lucky.  But I did find a micro to UBS converter and now have to try it out.

For the keyboard I found a slightly expensive Microsoft keyboard for Android.  Still have to try it out.  But apparently it works with bluetooth and came highly recommended. Samsung tablet does come with a book cover with a keyboard but I haven't seen a single one of those on retail in Dubai.  I did see it on Amazon - slightly costly.  I prefer having the keyboard separate though as I can then use it for other devices as well.

For the Flash disk I found a dual micro USB Flash disk - Sandisk Ultra Dual Drive m3.0 so one can use it both on Android and Windows.  I just checked and looks as though my tablet is OTG compatible and saw a YouTube demonstration where it works.  Will try it out before I leave for Canada next week.

Anyone else been playing with a Samsung tablet to make it USB compliant and easy to work with? Been quite fun to see how one can make Android work with USB.

@deanhills hey dude stay safe on your flight and have a happy trip! For good specs but low price tablet why don't you give a check with Xiaomi brand tablet, if it's available in your area. For the external peripherals if you could possible find a flip cover with attached keyboard and some times there is keyboard and mouse package too. For light weight storage you can go find a USB OTG that can work through PC, mobiles or tablets (Note OTG should be supported by your device), you need that USB adapter btw.

Thanks for the suggestion @Vuluts. Xiaomi is not available as a laptop here in Dubai - haven't seen any in the regular outlets - may be in hidden ones or people may be getting it on order. Have seen smart phones but not laptops.

I went with Samsung, and managed to get all of the peripherals - a micro to USB adapter and USB hub. Initially searched for the cover with keyboard, but not available in regular outlets here in Dubai for the tablet I purchased. I'm almost on my way to South Africa, when I'm there I'll do all of the testing. Will take a photo of what it looks like.

As far as I know, Xiaomi doesn't have any official offline store, you can find it on some store but also, better to order it online.
