@Lampard.  What protection do you recommend for DDoS?  Particularly for games servers?  Do you have different protection for games servers than for regular VPS?

Thank you to Post4VPS and VirMach for my awesome VPS 9!

@deanhills, you need DDoS protection that works on different layers and protocols. For game servers UDP DDoS protection is very important because UDP is the most common used protocol for realtime applications like VoIP, game servers and IPTV.

UDP however is a bit special so not every DDoS protection provider offers UDP DDoS protection. What most providers without UDP protection do is simply nullroute the IP address and that literally has the effect of a normal downtime because the IP and all services under it cannot be accessed. So that is not even remotely a protection. They just do it to prevent the attack from spreading across their network and disturbing their network.

OVH for example has their special game DDoS protection products/addons which are basically basic/advanced UDP filtering DDoS protection through their firewalls and network infrastructure.

I think the suggestions, especially from some of whom are called 'staff', here are lacking in technical detail by about 100% and it's quite sad.

There isn't anything you can do once the attackers have your address to stop the incoming bandwidth. If you shut your container down they can still attack you and cause grief on the provider's routers. Taking the ip address 'offline' has no effect either. The datacenter of your provider can null route your specific address at their edge but then they will be tanking the attack for you. Your address has to be nullrouted at all of the datacenter's upstreams too for there to be any reduction in load/bandwidth on someones routers.

Someone is getting charged for your traffic if your container is on or not. If the attacker is persistent enough that address will be ruined for a long while.
