I don't feel they have recently changed their system about notifications. If my memory is correct, I also received their notifications last year.
Just FYI, I use outlook.com for the Freenom registration.

I've just checked the mail account associated with my Freenom account and then remembered that I rarely check that e-mail account. I had to create a new one when I first joined dot.tk, because it didn't like the @rocketmail.com extension of my regular Yahoo account. So I created a @yahoo.com with the same name, and haven't been checking the mails of that account in a while. All of the reminders were there. Since 2017. So Freenom does send a reminder for renewal of dot.tk domains.

I am using namecheap too, .org seems to be cheap, but I think it depends from domain to domain. I am interested in this thread.
