There are few basics you need to get right become come to Yoast.
01. First you need to find a fast and responsive theme.
02. Make Permalink structure SEO friendly.
03. Category structure.
04. Privacy Policy page and Contact page.
05. Home Page title tag.
06. Linking the site to Google webmaster tools.
07. Social Media Profiles.
08. Keyword research for Posts and Pages.
Yoast comes to play when you are doing posts and pages. That's when the plugin helps you a lot. Plus several other things you need to do initially such as setting up sitemap etc.

SEO plugins are okay but you need to actively submit your site to search engines to make them show up. It's not as like they will just show your blog whatsoever on a whim. They will see your site + and seo optimization you are doing there

WordPress SEO Plugins even do that for yourself, so you don't even have to submit your website to search engines manually anymore.

Unlike in old days there aren't many search engines to submit. What only matters is Google. When you connect the site to Google Webmaster tools it's simply do the rest by it self. Not even need to submit to Bing or Yahoo. Those pick your site after a while and rarely send anyt traffic to medium or low level sites.
