how does one go about setting up remote desktop access?

Is your query about Windows or Linux? Just to mention, in Windows VPS you just have to open port 587 and your pretty much done. However, if you're on a Linux VPS like CentOS or anything else, you'll first need to install an RDP client called xrdp and also open the RDP port but this time for xrdp its 3389. Just confirm which OS it is and I'll tell you further.

Like the user above mentioned, setting up an RDP is not hard but depends on what OS you'd like, there are VPSes available here that have windows RDP available however they are only trials and won't last very long(I beleive a trial is of 3 months), so most people would recommend using a linux based RDP unless you've a windows server key on you.

RDP is mostly when you have a graphical interface. If you don't that's called VNS when you are dropped into a shell something similar. Its mostly provided through the control panel like SolusVM or Virtualizor. You should check with your host.

I use NoMachine, it's only one click to install it!
But the drawback is this software is a bit heavy!

I was interested in how to do it in both windows and Lin. If you could provide any more info on opening the port in windows that would be great.

On Windows servers, opening ports is as easy as configuring your Win Firewall to accept the connection. Well here's a guide to do that: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.paralle...llels-ras/.

As I'd already mentioned, on Linux xrdp is a great one, for which you'll need to open 3389. It depends on the firewall you're using, whether its FirewallD for CentOS 7, iptables for CentOS 6 or earlier, ufw, or if you've VestaCP installed, then it'll be the Vesta Firewall for you where you can open the port through the web interface.

For your reference, here's how to open ports on various firewalls:

For FirewallD:

For iptables:

This can be used on VPS that has a Desktop Environment like KDE! This is the best software for Remote Desktop!

NoMachine is more a client for NX based remote access servers. You need to install a NX server, desktop environment and window manager on your Linux server to use it. However I believe that NoMachine also comes with its own NX server base.

This guide is only for NoMachine. To install a desktop environment and window manager you will need to use a different guide for your desired Linux OS.


Alternatively there is also X2Go which is based on FreeNX and it uses SSH to transport the remote session securely while being faster than most remote desktop protocols (VNC for example).
