I can also live with VPS alone, however cpanel hosting with a reliable host is definitely recommended. cPanel is an awesome panel to have - like way better than VestaCP. I like VestaCP because it is free and the ideal panel for a free VPS, but it can't begin to compete with cpanel.

What the shared hosting lacks though is it's very boring - too easy to use. I like the challenge of working with a VPS and learning new how-to's all of the time. I'm a total nut over my VPSs. And I do like my VestaCP too. Also nice to have a Forum to post to for the VPS as one gets to be in touch with others who are learning at the same time with you or sharing their knowledge.

Shared hosting, mostly free shared hosting, have really bad support. I don't even like their support because sometimes they don't understand my question. That's way to bad.
Also, VestaCP could bring you to have more knowledge inside VPS thing, and also, can manage it by yourself, no need to worry about anything, can access SSH, use FTP etc, have an unlimited website. That's way too nice.
But a VPS is way too expensive if you only need for website hosting, I won't recommend it.

Heliohost is still there, the one with cpanel that I loved is this one. But we can only have 1 website at the same time. Based on their servers, some of their server are good, others are not. Like Johnny is not really good, slow respones, so many downtime.

I joined FWS around 2009 when it started to die.  In 2008 it became the place that helped me find great shared hosting hosts.  They had a fantastic search page for free web hosts with filters - one could filter on cpanel and a whole range of specs.  When I joined in 2009 there were technical problems with the free web host directory that didn't get attended to an eventually by 2011 it caved in its original excellent format.  There is one now, but only contains iffy hosts and there is no longer a filter in place like there used to be.  After 2009 (not sure of the exact year - could have been 2010 or 2011 too) there was a great fight between staff and some energetic members and when they were temp banned traffic became very quiet - like started to really die - most of them never returned.  Then the owner tried to change the Forum format that may have made things worse instead of better.  One of the old crowd- deeplist - returned for a while, and that helped it a little, but sadly it's like ghost town in there now.  Agreed.  There had been some excellent times for me.  I'm sorry I missed the period before I joined however.  Real quality members at the time and they worked hard on high quality.
