I think people have no clue what premium domains are or what those are for. Only several parties who really have a need for this. Like Domain resellers (Thats a dying breed), Brand developers, professional level SEO people, end users with specific need for these domains. In basic a premium domain is a domain name which is worth more than registration value to someone who is interested in it.
The problem is term Premium Domains is vary over used because of it's catchy sound. These stuff has a long history. Before 2012, generic keyword domains aka Exact Match Domain played a big role in Google search rankings. Basically if you get an EMD and with back link spamming you would rank top for nearly any keyword even without much content. Even I had done it. It worked soo well with Amazon and Google AdSense. All you have to do was find a nice keyword with plenty of monthly traffic. lets say cheap mouse pads. If cheapmousepad.com is not available all u have to do was buying cheap-mouse-pad.info and u could rank well. Now what we earn with these domains are nothings when you think about what some did with those highly competitive keywords like insurance, car insurance, home loans, loans etc. These keywords worth millions.
That's how those ugly dash domains have come to play. Those days nobody cared. If you can earn 1000's usd per month why u bother if there is a hyphen in the domain name ? But in 2012, Google as put a stop to this whole domain game. Keyword in domain have no longer mattered. Today you can have Lollipop.club and rank top for best dedicated servers. So those dash domains or long tail domains or exact match domains have no value in search engine optimized. So, today, nobody going to sell you catch-me-if-you-can.com for a $1000. If you think it is a premium domain then you are still in past.
But still those single word or multiple word competitive keywords has a domain value. Domains like Insurance.com, Loans.com, colleges.com have a massive value. If you its unfair you can't register them for 10 usd, well, it doesn't matter since people who know the value willing to buy these for millions of dollars. But we are talking about these .com domains. Today there are so many other types of domains. As long as someone wants a is to badly those will too have a premium value. Sometimes these new gTLD look nicer than more a .com name. If you want to start society for Goldfish keepers which sounds better, Godlfish.com or Goldfish.club ?
