whole class actively / directly participating in bullying one person is kinda too much. I was very young when in school. Silent, bookish, loved by science and english teachers. But i never knew or saw any bullying. but then i think bullying happens mostly in urban/industrial areas.
It may be that the rest of the class tries to ignore or take a stance that they have not seen anything which might provoke anger in the victim.
But my basic premise (which is mostly based on guess) is such students dont have proper / reliable and loving family support and/or they themselves have mental issues.
We have some systematic ragging in engineering / medical schools. But again I didn't see much in Engineering school and do not see such outbursts. So I think such cases should be carefully studied each time and not something to be explained away by a cover-all theory.
