AcmlmBoard is a good niche software although it is useless for anything productive and hasn't been worked on since SquidEmpress was banned from developing it (because of some really childish thing one of the developers has against her).
MyBB is the best forum software in my opinion though, it's community driven, good looking by default, easily customisable, and light. It was recommended to me by a friend at school, and I then used it in practice for my now-killed site. SMF does have advantages over it in some areas, and phpBB sucks 100% in my opinion...
