So much backlinks causes Google to block your site and remove it from lists so I say it's all about content and few backlinks. Massive backlinking is considered as spam by Google.

If you add 1000 backlinks in a single day then it wouldn't look natural. Also you need to be careful about anchor text of those links. If all back links have same anchor text then it won't look good either. So you need to have mix of all type of links. Related, not so related, do follow, no follow and all kinds of anchor texts.
