Well, that's not a subdomain rather a subdirectory. I do not think it will have much effect on his website's SEO, I see websites in subdirectories coming up fine on Google search.
It's technically equivalent to moving a blog from the root URL, ie, example.com to example.com/blog.
As for the required steps others have contributed much in this thread and I do not think I have anything extra to contribute here. Good luck @xdude.
