hi,
i think punBB is good for it's speed and it is tiny at least for visually impaired people
myBB is the open source forum which is used mostly in everywhere, du to it's themes and plugin system like wordpress
smf is tiny and has good features
phpbb is not bad, it has many features, and wxWidgets forum is made with it
but, in my idea, punBB or myBB are best options

myBB - Easy to install, clean and simple, a lots of plugins and styles, custom ranks and emoticons
I was using myBB for a long time and it was good forum software.

I am a great admirer of NodeBB. They have an excellent UI and UX. Just that they need a VPS to work. Also NodeJS based and mostly you need SSH access. Addon base is also not very big. Flarum is something around similar lines and better to be in PHP.

I like many forum software.
MyBB: Easy to use, and has many good themes with plugins.
SMF: Many themes available, but it has some bugs.
IPB: I like its design, but its expensive to buy the license of it.

I have a wast experience in forums and plugins and through my experience, I found SMF the easiest ( easier than MyBB ) and XenForo was a tad bit hard to understand in the start but It can be utilized more then SMF / MyBB

SMF is a dead script now. They were working on 2.1 since the beginning of the universe and has not reached anywhere yet. 2.0 is age old, not responsive and takes ideas from half a decade back.

I have been following SMF since 2007 ( or even earlier may be). I have a few forums which ran on SMF. I was using the version before 2.0 and was one of the first adapters of 2.0. 2.0 came out as by around 2010. And SMF were simply adding security patches ever since. You can imagine the status of a script if it's latest stable script is like 5 years old. In the thread you posted, please check the date. They released beta 1 somewhere last year. Don't you think that it is too big a gap between beta releases ?

I myself prefer Simple Machines Forum. As the proccess of installing it as easy as hell. I think even a 5 years old kid can install it . Jokes Apart, Simple Machine Forum are quite good. And they loads really fast. They have a lot of plugins and Themes. Another free forum script I like is Wedge. Though it has a lot of bugs and not fully ready yet and a small amount of plugin, but it has some great features. I like it too.

I liked SMF at first because of the design, but it has so many bugs, so now i use MyBB only.
