windows 10 is good for graphics and latest features. but hate the sneaky features in it. so i use ltsb 2016 and with heavy modifications to services and settings. I also keep windows 7 64bit and multiple linux distros installed in a multi-boot configuration.

What a surprise! I use LTSC 2019 myself and love it. Just plain and simple security updates and big fixes.

LTSC is the new name of LTSB since Windows 10 Build 1809 and 2019 is just the new name for the latest LTSC build.

yes. simple light and all that. Though I still clamp down further. I turn off defender and update services among others.

Windows 7 Professional is the best option for normal range CPU's and Laptops. and 64bit version is more efficient if your hardware support is compatible.

Interesting!  Can you tell us a little more about the in-built hotspot and why you like it?  What is it doing for you and how does it work?

I'm still on Windows 7, but very soon I'll probably need to change.  First I've heard of the in-built hotspot of Windows 10, which if I understand it correctly what it is about could make Windows 10 more attractive for me.  Does it make your WiFi faster?

I use Lubuntu, which is a Linux-based OS.

Why? I use it because it's an official spin from the Ubuntu family. That means there are ample resources and everything I need/want has a .deb package, and most if them are in official repositories. This keeps me running smooth and always up to date.

I currently stick with 18.04 LTS, because it's the last LTS with the LXDE desktop environment. What I really like about LXDE is the simplicity and stability. Unfortunately, they'll be changing to LXQt. I'm not a big fan of change for change sake, but they seem to think this is for the best.

One of the best things about LXDE is that it is very light. Many people use that as a reason to use it on older hardware, but I like it because it's screaming fast on modern hardware. It does what it says on the tin. It's a desktop environment. It doesn't have bells and whistles. It just facilitates the desktop and stays out of my way. I don't have to play with it. I don't have to customize it. I don't have to install silly weather apps that will sit on my desktop. It just gets out of the way so that I can get my tasks completed. You know, it does what a desktop should do and nothing more. I like that.

I may end up spinning my own custom Linux-based OS, just to keep using LXDE. Fortunately, I don't have to cross that bridge until 2023, maybe 2028 as Shuttleworth announced that the Ubuntu 18.04 will get 10 years of support. It's not clear if that extended support also extends to the official Ubuntu spins. I hope so!

I'm totally intrigued with this and curious. Are you using Lubuntu as an alternative to Windows or in addition to Windows? If you are using it as an alternative, does Lubuntu come with a Window equivalent kind of GUI? What applications are you running on it?

I use it exclusively as my desktop. LE is the "GUI" that you're thinking of, that's the part you see. It's your "desktop environment." Sort of like with Windows, you have a kernel (that'd be the Linux, as Linux is just the kernel) and a desktop environment which is also a Windows Explorer process.

I use all the apps I need. I edit music, images, and can even edit video. I browse. I write.

With Linux, it just works. You don't (normally) have to futz about getting your kernel recompiled to work with your wireless adapter. You haven't had to do anything like that in over a decade.

I use the command line, but that's because I enjoy it and it's faster for me. I have GUI apps that do it all. If I have a question, I just type it into Google and it spits out the answer.

I don't use Linux because I'm an opensource zealot. I use proprietary software. I use Acronis and I use VMware. Lately, I've even been using a proprietary word processor. I use Linux because, unlike the myths, it just works.

I don't even hate Windows or Microsoft! LOL I just don't prefer them. I'm comfortable with Linux and much of my early computer use was with Unix. It works for me.
