here is what people say about bsd flavours..
OpenBSD security, FreeBSD desktop, NetBSD runs on almost everything, DragonFlyBSD network computing, grid etc.
bsd is derived from Unix and it is a whole system. kernel and packages all maintained by the same team. as opposed to Linux, which is the kernel and associated drivers.
bsd licensing is very simple compared to Linux.
it is mostly a choice or things you need the way you need them. more secure is a kind of myth.
Apple's os came from it in a way.
you can directly install it from hdd i think. never tried though.
boot into your system using a live small Linux iso like gparted or something. run it from ram. now set up partitions. next download mfsbsd image and write it using
dd of=/dev/sda bs=1m
next you boot from disk and run
bsdinstall
you only need vnc from control panel.
if you fail for some reason, then i will host a bsd image over pxe which you can network boot to and install.
I'm sure you can directly boot using grub too.

Sincere Thanks to VirMach for my VPS9. Also many thanks to Shadow Hosting and cubedata for the experiences I had with their VPSs.
