Content has been always being the king. It's just Google took time to give it priority. Their idea was more back-links means people love the page/site more. Everyone started buying / making back-links they had to move on from that. Give priority to content is a foolproof method. Back-links still matter too but it's just not like before. You no longer can rank only with links if you don't have good quality content.
These days in-page optimization plays a bigger role in ranking. Things like keyword stuffing can kill your site but if you carefully prepare your pages with right amount of words and keywords in right places it can give a good boost to your Google search ranks.
