Go for a 32bit version if you get 512MB RAM vps if you get at least 1GB then go for a 64bit operating system. My personal favorite server OS is Ubuntu.

Also they patch all bugs and vulnerabilities fast unlike CentOS or Debian Linux. A perfect combination for my needs.
