Some useful commands for VPS!

Hello Guys,
There are some useful commands for VPS and also good for beginners!



1. Used for Checking RAM!

free -m

2. Used for Checking SSD/HDD

df -h

3. Used for Switching directories. 

cd [ folder/file name ]
4. Used for making Directory.

mkdir [ folder name ]
5. Used for moving Files or Folder

mv [ filename or folder ] [ New folder or Location ]


6. Renaming File or folder

mv [ old name ] [ new name ]
7. Copy files or folders

cp [ file or folder ] [ new location or folder ]
8. Removing/Delete files.

rm -rf
9. Checking files and folders in which directory in you are.

ls


10. Download any file or URL

wget [ filename or URL ]

11. Changing your VPS/SSH password

passwd
12. Giving folder/file permissions.

chmod -777 [ filename or foler ]

13. Unzip zip files!

unzip [ filename ]
14. Creating or extracting tar commands example:

Create a new tar archive.
tar cvf archive_name.tar dirname/


Extract from an existing tar archive.
tar xvf archive_name.tar

15. Create or Extract gzip files:

To create a *.gz compressed file:
$ gzip test.txt


To uncompress a *.gz file:
$ gzip -d test.txt.gz

16. Creating .txt document!

Following example creates a .txt file called test.txt under your home directory.
nano test.txt
17. Checking the users controlling your VPS/accounts.

whoami

18. Checking network status.
netstat

19. Checking VPS Running programs!
top

20. Creating a manually document file.
touch [ filename with extension ]

ALL THESE 20 Commands are Very useful.. and very helpful.

1. How to get out of VPS:

exit


2.Check what OS VPS is running on:
cat /etc/*-release


3. Check whether OS is 32 or 64 bit:

uname -a

4. How to reboot VPS:

reboot

5. How to show log of previous reboots of VPS:
last reboot

This is the basic linux command that you can use to do something basic . This is very helpful for newbies even i learn some new commands from this post

On Searching for file by Name(https://www.digitalocean.com/community/t...-linux-vps):
file / -name {FILE_NAME}

It would be better if the replied ones are also merged in the main topic since guests usually look at the main content and leave, so that will benefit Smile

i agree with you. why only posts (#2) ? (#3) also should merge with the thread. If @deanhills & @Vuluts agree with this suggestion then we will merge it.

Nice attempt, though you should've added the kind of output we would be expecting after the command as to not get confused.
