I don't think these events will work unless there is a big interest by a large number of members which I don't see here. I think just to get members to make their number of posts every month is already a miracle. Their incentive is to keep their VPS alive. Like what bigger prize can there be than to post for a VPS?

well i agree, Nothing can be bigger prize then free VPS for just 20 posts. But with events we can get more users and obviously sponsorship depend on active members so we need to do some events, Its true we can't give nothing more then a VPS, If people don't interest to won some points or reduce monthly post then they shouldn't apply for the event.
