How effective are vaccines for stopping the spread of Covid 19 globally?

You do know that they stopped the J&J administration in U.S already? The blood clot risk is getting bigger.
No one knows what the future holds, that's why its potential is infinite

I am 110% agreed with you. even poor govt make fake cases for gain numbers of patients to get AID from rich countries.
Many many people here died specially children due to unavailability of water. i am not talking about clean drinking water. thousands of deaths with hunger. and second big ration is road accidents. but no one prominent these issues. just focus the issue which make them AID and funds etc..

Anyways. all of these discussion not moral that COVID-19 is not exist. this pandemic is exist and live taking. so don't make it joke. be safe for your self and your family.

Yeah, I posted that a couple days before my last post. The blood clot risk is actually fairly low for the amount of people that have been administered with this variation of vaccine, the CDC and FDA are halting the process out of an abundance of caution so more research can be done to make sure that the J&J vaccine is as safe as possible. Mean while, the Moderna, Pfizer and AstraZenica vaccines are still on the market with 110 Million + doses already administered.

Yes, indeed!.. But that's just as an act of -and I quote- 'an abundance of caution'.

Here is the joint statement that has been released by the CDC and FDA on April 13th:
Quote:   As of April 12, more than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine have been administered in the U.S. CDC and FDA are reviewing data involving six reported U.S. cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the J&J vaccine. In these cases, a type of blood clot called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) was seen in combination with low levels of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia). All six cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination. Treatment of this specific type of blood clot is different from the treatment that might typically be administered. Usually, an anticoagulant drug called heparin is used to treat blood clots. In this setting, administration of heparin may be dangerous, and alternative treatments need to be given.

CDC will convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on Wednesday to further review these cases and assess their potential significance. FDA will review that analysis as it also investigates these cases. Until that process is complete, we are recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution. This is important, in part, to ensure that the health care provider community is aware of the potential for these adverse events and can plan for proper recognition and management due to the unique treatment required with this type of blood clot.

Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare. COVID-19 vaccine safety is a top priority for the federal government, and we take all reports of health problems following COVID-19 vaccination very seriously. People who have received the J&J vaccine who develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination should contact their health care provider. Health care providers are asked to report adverse events to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System.

Thus 6 reported cases of CSVT out of 6 millions administrations. Once again 1 in a million probability and all the reported cases were Women between the ages of 18 and 48.

I would imagine the J&J freeze has something to do to counteract vaccine hesitancy in the US which is already high.

Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine had the same probability risk and it was stopped in a lot of Countries, including South Africa.

How did the SA authorities react to these J&J latest development?

Cool. I think we all need an unbiased view of the current situation for the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine.

Yes the blood clot events seem to be still rare, as the number of reported cases are currently low.

But still, people are scared because the scientists have not found the root cause of the blood clot, and also have no idea why only women are affected. Smile

A lot of what we have been reading is it has to do with Hormones. Estrogen naturally causes blood clots and you see those chances increase exponentially when women take some form of birth control. Johnson & Johnson have reached out as of yesterday 4.16.21 seeing if Pfizer and Moderna would be willing to help them investigate, but I am not sure if they rejected the offer or there are more discussions going on behind closed doors. As Dr. Fauci said, pulling the vaccine was a decision made out of an over abundance of caution and an attempt to display transparency and help coax any vaccine reluctance.

Here's a good article about the status in South Africa presently:
https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/...ost-lives/

In summary, South African authorities temporarily stopped vaccinations however authorities are under great pressure by local public health specialists to continue as soon as possible as only 230,000 health workers have been vaccinated to date. The Government is very behind in its immunization programme. South Africa currently only has the one vaccine - Johnson&Johnson (Pfizer is in the works but will only arrive a few weeks from now.  Johnson&Johnson is also better suited for a third world country, only one dose needed, no fancy refrigeration).  South Africa is very heavily committed and invested in the J&J vaccine.  J&J has an agreement with a pharmaceutical company in South Africa to manufacture the J&J vaccine locally that they won't be able to get out of as it is too far along.  With Oxford Astra Zenica South Africa could easily recoup its losses.  But J&J goes much deeper.  So I'm almost certain that South Africa will continue with J&J soon.  It just wants to go through the motions of appearing to be concerned and following J&J in the US.  I'm almost certain the US will resume with J&J soon as well.

I like what the article above says about chances of getting blood clots from Covid 19 being much greater than from the vaccine - I believe it is true:
Quote:But the risk of blood clots from Covid is at least several times higher. And the risk of dying from Covid versus an adverse reaction of a vaccine is barely comparable: if we achieve our goal of vaccinating 40 million people, then, in the worst scenario, about 40 may die from an adverse reaction of the vaccine. Without a vaccination programme, many thousands more will die of Covid.

I also agree with Dr. Alex Spyropoulos (see article at link below) that the blood clot comes from the body's immune response  more than from the vaccine itself.  And it is an extremely rare event with one in a million chance of occurring.
Quote:"It's not the vaccine that's causing it -- it's the body's immune response to the vaccine," said Dr. Alex Spyropoulos, a blood clot specialist and professor at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.
https://abcnews.go.com/Health/scientists...d=77093834

Quote:It's still not clear why a vaccine would trigger this cascade of events, but researchers said it mimics another well-documented reaction to heparin, a common blood thinner. For this reason, the CDC and FDA have warned against using heparin to treat anyone recently vaccinated with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

I thought so, indeed!.. What a conundrum!..

As I hinted to in my previous post the pause in the US -but also in SA- although medically justifiable has some PR stunt into-it, as you also suggested in your post. The pause should have a reassuring effect for the public that the 'authorities' has it under control and that they know what they're doing etc...

But especially in SA where AFAIK there is no serious alternative (Sputnik V, may be ?)

On the substance though and in my opinion, one in a million probability risk of a SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine–Induced Immune Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia (aka SARS-CoV-2 VITT) shouldn't be an obstacle in deploying the J&J vaccine (nor the Oxford/AstraZeneca vax.) now that we know this serious side effect and that we can educate the vaccinated people to be on the lookout for its signs 5/6 days to 2 wks after injection. The treatment -which does exist- for the eventual cases should be available and the cases should be dispached to the nearest equipped treatment center upon early signs.

About the newly described syndrome called: SARS-CoV-2 VITT (Vaccine–Induced Immune Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia.)
Please read the editorial of the New England Journal of Medicine of April the 9th which was entitled: SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine–Induced Immune Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia.

The editorial has all the contest and information linked to the 39 cases caused by the Oxford/AstraZeneka vaccine, as two teams of researchers in 2 recently published papers in the same journal seem to show that all cases tested positive for antibodies against platelet factor 4 (PF4.)
> Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia after ChAdOx1 nCov-19 Vaccination
> Thrombosis and Thrombocytopenia after ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 Vaccination

The interesting thing here is that these anti-PF4 antibodies are also observed in the 6 women of the J&J cases.

The real puzzle now is where those antibodies come from?  and I'll let the researcher tell us what he thinks:
Quote:“Whether these antibodies are autoantibodies against PF4 induced by the strong inflammatory stimulus of vaccination or antibodies induced by the vaccine that cross-react with PF4 and platelets requires further study,” wrote Andreas Greinacher from the University of Griefswald in Germany, and his co-authors. They suggested that one possible trigger of these PF4 reactive antibodies could be free DNA in the vaccine.

If the PF4 reactive antibodies trigger was indeed thefree DNA in the vaccine then the problem is the O/AZ vaccine platform and probably also in the J&J vaccine platform, and in this eventuality it would be interesting to see if Sputnik V also has any SARS-CoV-2 VITT issue of its own!...

For the unaware -and I've said this many times in my posts in this thread- O/AZ, J&J and Sputnik V are all adenovirus-based vaccines and -as things look currently- that might be the issue triggering those rare instances of SARS-CoV-2 VITT syndrome cases.

Stay safe!

Thanks for the detailed feedback @fChk.  I don't think Sputnik has been a consideration in South Africa "publicly".  I'm sure the Public Health authorities must have taken a look at all available alternatives including Sputnik, but hasn't mentioned Sputnik as a possibility yet.  Right now the only three vaccines have been O/AZ, J&J and Phizer.  O/AZ is out.  J&J was used as an experiment and then purchased in bulk. We haven't seen Phizer yet, but it is on order.

Looks like the Public Health Authority in South Africa has recommended to Government to resume J&J asap.  So possibly this can happen even before CDC in US allows resumption of J&J in the US.  So far there hasn't been one J&J vaccination found in South Africa with issues out of the almost 300,000 that have been vaccinated.  Maybe that was lucky though, as all that you said about anti bodies is true.  I just think however that South Africa really doesn't have a choice, since it's more or less put all of its eggs in one basket, and cannot afford to go another route. We're lucky just yet as the Covid 19 cases have dipped for a few months now. But since winter is about to start, a third wave of Covid 19 is expected to start any time now.  With possibly even new variants.  So the Government can't afford to delay J&J any longer.

@fChk  BTW what do you think of this?  Phizer trying to get the Government of South Africa to put up sovereign assets guaranteeing an indemnity against the cost of any future legal cases. I find it absolutely shocking.  Particularly shocking also is that they want complete confidentiality preventing public from being informed when issues with the vaccine arise. I wonder with this kind of zero ethics, why African Governments who have the know-how - such as the case with South Africa - just manufacture their own vaccine. Instead of following the rules. This sounds almost like a form of neo-colonization by large pharma conglomerates.

https://mg.co.za/coronavirus-essentials/...cine-deal/

Quote:In other negotiations, Pfizer went further. The company required some Latin American governments to put up sovereign assets, including federal bank reserves, embassy buildings or military bases — as a guarantee against indemnifying the cost of future legal cases. This was reported by the Bureau in February and picked up by more than 25 media organisations worldwide.

[...]

Quote:Experts have raised concerns that Pfizer and some other big pharma companies have demanded complete confidentiality during the recent vaccine negotiations, which would prevent the public from knowing about issues including indemnity protection and price. In South Africa, there are fears that any such secrecy clauses could undo public trust built up by years of anti-corruption work.
