What are you guys doing at home -covid lockdown?
#51
So after few months this thread opened, I would like to do an update on what I do during COVID-19 pandemic.
Actually there is no lockdown here so everything just went like usual, which is stupid. Cases in my town are increasing and now it's 800-something in a fairly small town.

So what do I do? I decided to join a community project where they need to build a system to handle their member. I build that with Laravel and I thought it'll be a long development, but now after a month it's almost done. Right now doing beta test with the community, hope everything is correct. After then can be released to the community.
^ and that project is my first Laravel project. What a risky choice right? Building something big with something that you just know like a week. Thank God Google is so nice to me so I can sort everything out Tongue.

Before I learn Laravel, I also learnt Django but until now I really confused on how it works. I see Laravel as MVC framework, I understand every little bit what explained in the tutorial video about Laravel. But not with Django, it's really a pain. Their documentation really nice, I see everything there but it's just way too much for me. I probably will see Flask for the next framework instead.
Thanks to Limitless Hosting and Post4VPS for providing me excellent VPS 13!

Yeah, I have a coworker that is a Python specialist and has been trying to get me to dip my toes into that language, from the syntax KBs I've looked at it looks like it has similar qualities to Swift where statements are self closing so you don't have to add any sort of break or semi-colon closure to the code which I like, but it also reminds me so much of PHP with conditional statements. I would love to hear about how your project is going and about some of the Peaks and Pits you encounter.

When the stay at home and mass closures first happened, I basically was doing nothing but watching tv and playing video games - just trying to keep my mind occupied. The more games I played, I started thinking that one of my old dreams was to make video games. As I get older, (I'm approaching 40 now) it is becoming very apparent that life is short and there's no time to idle on ones dreams...

So I decided to loosen up the purse strings just a little bit, and bought myself the cheapest laptop I could find (70$ USD for a intel core2 duo, 4gb ram, 250gb sdd disc) and set about chasing the dream.

My low end laptop won't run the more powerful game dev tools (unity, unreal) or even godot. My integrated video card is only capable of WebGL1, so that limits the tools I can use. I found some FOSS called GDevelop which is surprisingly full featured for what it is.

GDevelop is a visual scripting editor that uses javascript to create HTML5 games which can be exported to other platforms using other tools (cordova, ant, etc). While it's less powerful than other engines in terms of rendering and scripting, it's extremely easy to use and great for someone like me with no legitimate education in programming. I also like that because it uses javascript, anything I make with it is highly accessible and runs on just about anything.

I have a few smaller projects I've put out, and a few larger projects that I try to work on some every day. Progress is slow. It's tons and tons of work to make a video game... I can see why the big companies have huge teams working on it... but it's a hobby and I don't mind moving slow as long as I'm moving forward.

If it interests the community I wouldn't mind to make a thread in the gaming area to promote some of the things I'm working on. If not, and someone's curious you can just shoot me a pm Smile

Definitely interested in it. Please feel free to make any gaming related thread when you have time. I guess many other members would like to see it too.

I am particularly interested in the GDevelop you just mentioned. Seems to be really easy to use it to create games without much programming skills. Smile

I have never touched Swift (as I don't have any Apple product to test it with) code so I have no idea what kind of similarities it's Tongue. I really liked Python so much and it's very recommended for newbies too.

About my project, it's a Laravel project (I think I said this before), all until now is good. Sometimes the community want more and it takes time to build the newer version of what they want. I really enjoyed building things with Laravel.
The only thing I don't like is to build the database, so many thing to consider. At first when building the database, I was the only one who is the developer and have no one to talk with. So I talk to my friend that's also have the same interest in programming and he have been dealing with database too before. Total there are 30 tables I made (+ some from my friend) and it takes a week to prepare all of them. From Laravel perspective? It's easy. I can do all relation in 2 days which is fast considering my potato laptop + the time when I frustrated due to git reset hard command. I probably can do in just a day if my laptop is faster.

That's true, but not only in France and Italy. In fact Spain, Netherlands and Germany etc are also resuming restrictions which was eased earlier.

I also worry about the winter situation...... Just hope that the governments can learn from the past experience and will do better this time. Smile

My country too has started gearing up against a possible 2nd wave. The government had a special voice message that was played while calling someone explaining about the coronavirus. That voice message was temporarily removed when It was beleieved that the virus is under control. Now they have started that message again with a new message that says our triumph before is possibly going to be useless if a second wave emerges.

I think siutation will only worsen in winters as people tend to flock in groups more and social distancing is not that easy to follow.

I think siutation will only worsen in winters as people tend to flock in groups more and social distancing is not that easy to follow.

I live in a smallish town, so last Friday and Sunday had an opportunity to visit a city that is about 60 km away. They all wore masks in the malls as that is a rule, but social distancing was not observed, as there were also too many people together in the same space. I'm not used to that and it really made me nervous. What made me even more nervous was that it didn't look as though anyone cared about social distancing. I think people are just tired of Covid and want to pretend for it to go away here. And also the Government seems to have stopped the media from publishing statistics or articles about Covid statistics. So no news may give people the false impression the problem is going away. Which of course it is not. Come winter time, or maybe even during the holidays in December if people continue to be careless about social distancing, we may get an upsurge in cases again.

Hand in hand of people wanting Covid 19 to go away and not listen to the Government any longer are students and party goers. Once they are inside the bars, clubs and social gatherings where liquor is used they may lose all of their inhibitions and take their masks off with zero social distancing and lots of touching that typically go with parties and socializing. For the moment this is the greatest source of new infections in South Africa.
